Calculate your crop water footprint faster with a semi-automated tool

How does it work?

The calculator organizes the assessment process into a few straightforward steps.

1.Enter your crop water data

Enter the data you have previously obtained for your crop, including the information needed to calculate the blue and green water footprint components.

The tool works with data such as:

  • Actual crop water use
  • Irrigation
  • Crop yield
  • Area being assessed

2.Calculate the blue and green components

Using the data you enter, the calculator determines the corresponding water use and automatically performs the necessary conversions to provide results in:

m³/ha → m³/ton → m³

for the assessed area

3.Calculate the grey water footprint

You can assess up to three pollutants independently.

For each pollutant, enter the relevant values for:

AR · α · Cmax · Cnat

The calculator determines the grey-water equivalent volume per hectare for each pollutant and automatically selects the highest result.

4.Get your final results

Once you have entered the required data, the calculator provides:

  • Blue Water Footprint
  • Green Water Footprint
  • Grey Water Footprint
  • Total Water Footprint
  • Results are presented at two scales:
  • Per unit of product: m³/ton
  • For the assessed area: m³

You provide the data. The calculator performs the built-in calculations.

What does the calculator automate?

The Crop Water Footprint Calculator includes built-in formulas and functions designed to streamline the assessment process.

💧Automatic water-use conversion

Automatically converts the relevant values from:

mm → m³/ha

This makes it easier to determine blue and green water use per unit of area.

🌱Blue and green water footprints

Based on the crop water-use data and yield you enter, the calculator automatically calculates:

  • Blue and green water footprints per unit of product, in m³/ton

  • Blue and green water footprints for the assessed area, in m³

🧪Assessment of up to three pollutants

The grey water footprint section allows you to calculate results for up to three different pollutants.

Each pollutant can have its own values for:

  • AR: Application rate
  • α: Leaching fraction
  • Cmax: Maximum acceptable concentration
  • Cnat: Natural concentration

⚙️Automatic AR calculation

If you know the amount of product applied and the percentage of pollutant or active ingredient it contains, the calculator can determine:

AR = Product application rate × Pollutant or active ingredient content

If you already know the AR value, you can also enter it directly in the optional field provided.

🔎Automatic selection of the highest grey-water volume

The calculator independently determines the grey-water equivalent volume for each pollutant and automatically selects the highest result in m³/ha.

This value is then used to calculate the Grey Water Footprint.

📊Final results

The calculator automatically provides the following results.

Per unit of product:

  • Blue Water Footprint
  • Green Water Footprint
  • Grey Water Footprint
  • Total Water Footprint

For the assessed area:

  • Blue Water Footprint
  • Green Water Footprint
  • Grey Water Footprint
  • Total Water Footprint

A calculator designed to adapt to different crops

The calculator includes built-in formulas and automation. It is more than a blank template: you provide the necessary technical data, and the tool performs the included conversions, calculations, and result processing.

You can:

  • Modify crop data
  • Assess different crop yields
  • Work with different land areas
  • Use data corresponding to different locations
  • Assess up to three pollutants
  • Enter different concentrations and application rates
  • Compare different scenarios through separate assessments

The calculator simplifies the mathematical operations, but the data you enter must reflect the actual conditions of the crop and the area being assessed.

Who can benefit from this tool?

This tool is primarily intended for the following users.

🎓Students

For academic assignments, projects, theses, and research involving crop water footprint calculations.

🌱Environmental and agricultural professionals

For those looking for an organized tool to support assessments related to water use, agricultural production, and water footprints.

🔬 Researchers

For organizing data and assessing blue, green, and grey water footprint components across different crops or scenarios.

s.

🚜Farmers and agricultural technicians

For those who have the necessary crop data and want to analyze the water footprint associated with a crop and its production area.

Why use this calculator?

⚡Save time

Avoid performing every conversion and calculation manually to obtain the different water footprint components.

⚙️Semi-automated calculations

The formulas, conversions, grey-water volume selection, and main results are built into the file.

You obtain and enter the technical data; the calculator automatically performs the calculations included in the tool.

💧Three components in one tool

Calculate the:

Blue Water Footprint + Green Water Footprint + Grey Water Footprint

without having to use separate calculation files for each component.

📊Results at two scales

Get results both:

  • Per unit of product, in m³/ton
  • For the entire assessed area, in m³

🧪Assess multiple pollutants

Evaluate up to three pollutants independently and let the calculator select the highest grey-water equivalent volume automatically.

📚Built around an established methodology

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator perform the calculations automatically?

Yes. Once you enter the required data, the tool automatically performs the built-in conversions and calculations for the blue, green, and grey water footprint components, as well as the total results.

However, it is a semi-automated tool: obtaining and selecting the appropriate technical data remains your responsibility.

The calculator determines:

  • Blue Water Footprint
  • Green Water Footprint
  • Grey Water Footprint
  • Total Water Footprint

It includes built-in formulas and automated functions. It is more than a blank template: you provide the crop data and technical inputs, while the calculator performs the included conversions and calculations.

Results are presented at two scales:

  • Per unit of product: m³/ton
  • For the entire assessed area: m³

Yes. It is based on the Water Footprint Assessment (WFA) methodology described in The Water Footprint Assessment Manual.

For the blue and green components, the calculator is designed to work with data previously obtained through CROPWAT.

The Excel calculator does not replace the process of obtaining those data.

The calculator automates the calculations once you provide the required data for each pollutant.

You must determine the appropriate values for AR, α, Cmax, and Cnat based on the conditions of your assessment.

Yes. The calculator allows you to assess up to three pollutants independently.

It then automatically selects the highest grey-water equivalent volume obtained to continue the Grey Water Footprint calculation.

No. The grey-water equivalent volumes for different pollutants are not added together. The calculator selects the highest equivalent volume among the pollutants assessed.
